GridNinja – Multi-Touch Monome Emulator and Monome Host with VVVV

Leaving the Planet – GirdNinja Explorations 02_2015 by Leavingtheplanet on Mixcloud

Source available at
https://github.com/tekcor/GridNinja

GridNinja is a Monome Application written in VVVV. It runs perfectly with Windows touch devices, like in this case, the Microsoft Surface Pro 2.
It is a collection of different Apps which you can switch and play in parallel.
Most of the Apps are aimed to generate Midi Notes or Midi CC Values.
It runs up to two real Monomes by connecting via the Monomeserial Maxpatch (Make sure to match the ports and OSC prefix).
And in addition it has a multi-touch Monome Emulator. So in total you can
tweak 3 Monome’s at once, all having the same set of instruments but sending on different
Midi Channels. With some patch copy and pasting it is very easy to extend it to N Monomes

There are so far four instruments implemented.
Switching between them works by toggeling into switch mode by pressing the bottom right button.
It was tested on 64 and 128 Grid. The application is designed very dynamic so I expect it to work also
on 256 but could not test it.

Instruments:
[1] Step Sequencer
[2] Faders
[3] Ray Circler
[4]+[5] Keyboard
[6]+[7] Autoscale Keyboard Polygome style

[1] Step Sequencer
The top row is running the postion. The glowing buttons left and right from it are the start and end positions.
Holding the very left button and pressing somewhere in the top row will set the new end point. Holding the very right button and pressing somewhere will set the new starting point.
As in most step sequencers you set the notes by pressing the buttons from the second to the seventh row.
So you play in total 6 notes. In the bottom row you find two important functions:
The button to the left of the last button (eg 63 or 127) is reversing the sequencer.
The button two left from the last button is setting the velocity according to the tilt sensor for all notes at the step of the running light at the time of holding that button.

[2] Faders
You have 7 Banks of Faders. Amount of Faders per Bank depends on Monome Size. In a 128 you have 15 faders per bank. So in total 15×7 faders. The most right column is switching the bank

[3] Ray Circler
This is a somehow experimental instrument that turned out to make fantastic rhythms. For default I set it to the same notes then the Step Sequencer to bring some more dynamics into the drum patterns.
It is basically a turning line and you can specify the center point. And you can set intersection points. The line turns to the sync clock and if it hits an intersection point it triggers a note. The closer the note is to the center point the higher is the velocity. Notes are set separately and you can switch through notes in the last column (like with the Fader bank).
There are two modes and you toggle between them by pressing the button left of the bottom right button.
First mode: Toggle center points
Second mode: Toggle Intersection points

[4] + [5] Keyboard
A Keyboard with a looper. All C’s are marked as glowing buttons. Pressing the first top button triggers the looper. It loops 16 bars and then starts to repeat and also indicates what is repeated. Stopping the loop works by pressing both the first and the second button in the first row.

[6] + [7] AutoScale Looper Keyboard (Polygome Clone)
You can select the scale from almost all existing scales and a basenote in the VVVV patch.
It loops what you play while you are playing. Also quantisation is used.

GridNinja

Personal to do list / stuff that was not ready for release but is cooking:
– Something inspired by Polygome and Press Caffee
– External App Routing
– Standalone Sound Engine
– MLR with the Standalone Sound Engine

Konsul Gnadenwalze – Aššur & Cyclades [Album Release]

Free mp3 Album and Mix download goes here!

Konsul Gnadenwalze is the alter ego of two gifted musicians. On stage they combine energetic live shows with minimalistic visuals. Aside of the performances they are creating their own elaborate Konsul Gnadenwalze universe. A lovely mixture of pseudo-scientific and poetic references. They create dub-wise broken beat abstractions, beautiful and brutal, organic and mechanized at the same time. Each successive listen reveals new depths, pulling you further into the world of Konsul Gnadenwalze. A wired carousel ride with the ancient question of whether we revolve around our environment, or our environment revolves around us.

There is a limited physical distribution available with a special handcrafted booklet. Exclusively at shows and with luck when contacting the artist directly.

共生立方 SC#006 VA Compilation Release

Free Download goes here!

We are very happy to release our second various artist compilation. Again we feature electronic artists from all around the world – Iran, Japan, Taiwan, USA, Mexico, Russia and Germany. This is a global network based on friendship and the will and interest to express certain thoughts and emotions in an digital way and share it with others. Especially in 2014 – when we see the world shaken by sudden wars and political unrest – we want to submit this compilation to peace and freedom, regardless boarders and nations.

We start the selection with Odepth aka Arash Akbari from Iran. Compositions from Odepth are very moody with well designed pads – thoughtful and deep accelerating you for this sound journey.

Second we go with Abduct. Initially from Mexico is living in Budapest right now. Check out the page for his latest AV installation and more albums. Abduct is sound design at it’s best – as you might know from other posts here on SC.

Andi Finger is a publisher and artist from SC. This track is co-produced with Mephisto. The track has a lot of space and actually sounds like a good mixture of inspirations from Burial and Moderat.

Leaving the Planet is the Band of mine (David Gann) with Tzeshi and DorianDroid singing in this track. Recorded live in a gig in Lisbon.

r.m.ʝ〜ʎ is an artist from Japan. Her tracks have a lot of drive and push – combined with a happy mood. definitely a good listening!

The next track by GLASKIN is the one track that you want to have in your DJ set! ‘Party’s over’ is a great track and we are happy to have it in the mix. It is also ending the first thematic part in the compilation.

Second thematic part in this compilation is changing to a more urban and industrialized mood. It is introduced by Reverse Bullets – or Klaas van Carlos (Perfect Entropy) – who is currently oscillating between New York and Berlin as an independent film maker and producer.

This is also how we get to know Rowan J. Thyme from Virginia Beach in the US. He has a pretty cool urban style with really interesting tension curves in all the tracks. Absolutely recommending it!

‘Fossil of Flame’ is a solo track from Tzeshi (already appeared in the Leaving the Planet track). This is live PD patching going on here!

And at last we have a beautiful track from our friends YBSTN from St. Petersburg – They released already an album on SC and are doing fine with their AV installations and performances from what we hear. Many greetings at this point!

The artwork is produced from raw VVVV renderings from Kyle McLean (everyoneishappy.com).

That’s it. Hope everyone enjoys it. Leave us some feedback and share it.

Live Performers Meeting 2014 Eindhoven – Review

We have been at the Live Performers Meeting in Eindhoven, Netherlands from 26. to 28. of June and this are some impressions. Running around with a small Zoom recorder, I tried to get some sound from the performances recorded. Not the best quality, but it sounds very underground at least.

In the mix are four performances from the following groups or artists:

Yellows music – Great sound and visual duo from Turin, doping finest beats in this live set.
Eyes on the Wall – Another amazing duo from Germany, fantastic visuals from microscope footage of cells.
Fake Samoa Very intense Sound combined with visuals from metal work form a very strong audio-visual experience.
+ the last one I don’t know, hopefully someone give me a hint soon, it was recorded saturday night (comment here or soundcloud please)!

This was only a short collection of the performances that were played in these three nights on three stages. It was the fifteenth edition of the LPM and this time, it has to be mentioned, it was organized without the EU funding, that normally drives the event. However the community is totally behind it and it also draws enough people from all around the world, so that this edition was amazing as always.

Besides a lot of audio-visual performances, workshops, talks and installation, there is the very famous VJ Torna going on all the time, were VJ’s battle each other in quick rounds. This is a event organized together with the LPM team by Candaş Tuncer and others from the Digital Experience Collective from Istanbul. Can totally recommend checking out the pages.

Also very refreshing was to meet the people from Eindhoven. specifically I can recommend checking out the Widt Project with the totally beautiful web page and amazing video’s to watch. And what surprised me the most was to see the performance of Kirsten Swensen & Sarco. Why? Because Kirstenb Swensen, curator from Lab1 (where the event took place) was doing the visual with DELPHI LIVE CODING!

LPM LIVE PERFORMERS MEETING // SPHERES // BY KIRSTEN SWENSEN & SARCO PART 2 from Kirsten Swensen on Vimeo.

Installation wise we saw a very beautiful piece from Martin Boverhof from Borndigital.nu and Anne Gentenaar aka VJ Illuminator from Amsterdam. Martin Boverhof was basically 3d mapping a sculpture made from paper and bamboo by the designer Peter Gentenaar. Martin Boverhof used VVVV for the mapping and also made it interactive using the leap motion. So people could enter the room and change the lighting of the triangulated mesh on the sculpture.

And let there also be said something about our performance – Leaving the Planet – we enjoyed it. There was not a lot of preparation before because as you may have seen, in the week before LPM we were extremely bussy redesigning the page. Anyway, we always jam. Tzeshi was running PD and was live processing her voice AND playing synth at the same time. I was doing beats with monome and VVVV, running visuals at the same time and doing sends and the overall mix. What a luck that we live in the age of multicore processors and patching MAYHAM.

Bunai Carus – Indigo

Bunai Carus fell into a blue mood. From Utsah Park fires, to the oceanic Kern Arc, beats and melodies turn with Ultra Violet, and runs with paces. The indigo sun blow its strange colour storm to wipe the slate clean, like the exuvia leaves place to a new life cycle.

Bunai Carus from Montpellier in France came up with their sixed EP on Symbioticcube and we totally love the summer vibe. It is time to relax and indulge into colors and enjoy the flow of the living world around us. The tunes have been mastered especially to be fat and loud with standing basedrums on stage for you DJ’s and at the same time it is that kind of dense pad music that can stimulate your relaxed evening just in the right way.
Enjoy and share please.
